Sunday Stills "Ethnic Foods"
Sweet Bologna (which is a whole lot better than Lebanon Bologna)
and Pot Pie, which I don't have a picture of, but its a homemade noodle cooked in chicken broth. I am a mixture of Swedish, English and whatever. I grew up in northwestern PA, but on meat, potatoes and a vegetable, normal vegeatables. I didn't even know what broccoli and cauliflower were until I went to college.
We cooked a rib roast on the grill yesterday, while visiting Sara, Jake and Makenzie in CO. Makenzie, 2 1/2, is coming home with us for a week, so I'll have lots of play time this week with her and cousins Caden, who is also 2 1/2 and Tyler (3 1/2 mo).
Hubby first trims a little fat off,
Then he salts and peppers both sids, and places it on the tray, top fat up.
Next, we spread just a little olive oil across the top and on the bottom, so it doesn't stick it stays juicy.
He covered it with a tent of tin fuel, to keep in the moisture.
On to the grill, an hour at 250 degrees, then another 2 hours at 350 degrees.
Checking the temp... almost done at at 170.
Done to perfection! The roast was so juicy.
Ready to eat, along with baked potatoes an onions, cooked on the grill, too.
Sorry to be so late getting up these photos. We had to eat first, then I was too full!

Sunday Stills "Your Favorite Recipe or Restaurant"
For this Sunday Stills Challenge, Ed says, "I figure since I’m home for the next 2 weeks I really have no idea what to do for the next couple of challenges so we’ll keep it simple. This week will be a food challenge so pick your favorite recipe or if so inclined go out for dinner and show us what you like about the restaraunt or if you do the recipe I’m sure the other folks will enjoy not only seeing the dish but getting the recipe..:-))
"
This week was a busy week, since we had a new grandson, Tyler Jay born on Tuesday! (Hubby is just thrilled that baby Ty has his middle name!) We had big brother Caden, 2 1/4 (do you count months???) stay with us from Tuesday until Friday, including the 3 nights! He did really well, with almost no tears at bedtime!
That means that all my pics are of baby and big brother, which I'll post next, so come visit!
This was our meals on Tuesday, LOL. Hubby and I had Runza (anyone know what they are? I think they are just here in Nebraska. They are made with cooked hamburger and cabbage in the middle of a small, soft bread dough and baked) and a hamburger on the way to the hospital. I love Runza fries!
Then we ordered a pizza and brought it home for our first supper with Caden. We also had applesauce, and then strawberries for snack before bed! These next pics may be of a snack, but after a busy horsey day for me yesterday, this is what we had for supper.

Sunday Stills: "FOOD"
January 1, 2010
Our Sunday Stills challenge this week was the word, "Food". Every year, on New Year's Day, we have our traditional pork and saurkraut for good luck. Growing up in Pennsylvania, this was a familiar dish, not only with the Germans, but with every nationality in the state. We always had a fresh pork roast, baked with saurkraut all around it.
My grandma would put a little sugar in the kraut, to take away some of the tang. (She had a little English in her. Both my dad and I love our sweets.) But my husband likes the tangy taste of the saurkraut, and so do our children, so no sugar goes in the kraut. Usually we would cook potatoes and mash them. When we serve the pork and saurkraut, you would spoon the saurkraut over the potatoes. This year, our meal was only for my husband, Tom, and I, so I quartered 6 potatoes and placed them around the pan. We had leftovers for 2 more days!
I love the New Year, and I love the memory of my grandma cooking the pork and kraut.
The recipe: very easy!
The key is to salt and pepper the fat side, and leave that side up in the pan. I usually crock pot the meat and saurkraut together, but most people like to bake the meat. We like the bagged saurkraut, not the type that comes in the cans. It has a different taste. Salt and pepper to taste. Do not let the pan dry out, so add plenty of water to keep the meat and saurkraut moist. Cover with foil, and the lid if necessary.
I would recomment doing mash potatoes on the side, and spooning the saurkraut over the potaotes and the pork.
Enjoy, and good health, good fortune, and good luck to you in 2010!
